Copyright St Laurence church 2012
St Laurence was built in 1062 by the Manstons of Manston Court, whom lie in the grounds, because the Danes had troubled the inhabitants and was built as a fortress and refuge. The tower could be used to repel those who came to attack. The nave was large enough to shelter the people who lived round about the area.
In 1175 the church was too small for the population, therefore the aisle and porch were added. This work was initiated by Richard de Manston. From 1220 – 1225 the 2 chapels were added, The St Thomas Becket Chapel and the St Catherine of Alexandria Chapel.
The church was originally built as a chapel to the mother church of Minster and consisted of only the nave, tower and the apse.
